Thoughts on Forever Pieces with L’Envers (AD)

L’Envers kindly sent me this jumper. All images, words and thoughts are my own.

Let’s talk about forever pieces; garments that transcend seasonal trends that will last for years and years to come. Would you rather buy a handful of new jumpers each winter for £40 - £80 each, or invest in a high quality, sustainable, timeless knit for £200 that will stand the test of time?

Slow, sustainable fashion is expensive, that’s a fact. Not everyone can splash out on expensive garments and not everyone can afford to make an investment purchase. I’m writing here to those of you who can opt to buy less and buy better. If you have the money and have the choice, choose wisely. Invest your hard-earned money into a high quality item in a timeless style that you know you will wear over and over again. Stay clear of synthetic, mass-produced garments that were manufactured in sweatshops and will likely fall apart following a few washes. Choose to buy better.

It’s no coincidence that I’m writing this as the craze of Black Friday gets underway. This American shopping tradition has swept the U.K in recent years, becoming a key date in the shopping calendar. Most stores now slash their prices for up to a week, encouraging their customers to buy buy buy. It’s a marketing ploy designed to tempt you into purchasing items you simply do not need. Fair enough, if you’ve been eyeing up a garment for ages waiting until you could afford it or if you’re making the most of the discounts to purchase something you really need - but so many of us get swept up in the excitement of the sales and end up buying things we neither want nor need.

If you’re planning on shopping this Black Friday, do yourself a favour and take a step back before you head to the till. Look at the garment in your hands and really analyse it. Is it something you’ve loved from afar and will love for years to come? Is it a forever piece? This is the time of year when you can make those essential purchases that you’ve been saving up for - the perfect time to invest in forever pieces that will hang in your wardrobe for years and years.

Enough of Black Friday. Discounts aside, what are these forever pieces that you should be filling your wardrobe with? For me, forever pieces are the garments that I come back to again and again. The items that I wear most of the time, that go with most other things in my wardrobe and that I know I’ll still be wearing in ten years time. For winter, they include my favourite black jeans, my Blundstone boots and a couple of jumpsuits that I find myself wearing on repeat. At the beginning of the season, I realised there was a forever piece I was missing from my winter wardrobe: a high quality woolen jumper that I could throw on over dresses or with my jeans when the temperatures dropped. It needed to be a classic knit, in a neutral colour, that was effortless to wear. That’s when I stumbled upon L’Envers.

When it comes to finding a forever piece of knitwear, L’Envers ticks all the boxes. Their garments are simple and timeless, with no unnecessary fuss or trend-led detailing. They’re the kind of knits that you could wear with anything, at any time. Made from organic cotton and natural wool with no synthetic materials, they’re designed to stand the test of time.

Yes, I’ve seen similar jumpers for lower price points, but these high street knits are mass-produced by brands who don’t care about the environment or their employees. Again, I’d rather buy one timeless jumper than dozens of throwaway knits. It’s better to have one or two extra-special, forever jumpers than drawers crammed full of tatty garments you barely ever wear. How many jumpers does one person need in their wardrobe, after all?
