Slow Stays | Old Orchard Cabin, Unique Hideaways (ad)
Ad | This was a photography job for Unique Hideaways, but they have also asked me to share the stay here
Nestled in a small orchard in the East Devon countryside, Old Orchard Cabin was the perfect base to ease ourselves into autumn. After almost two weeks driving around Cornwall, basking in the late summer sun and swimming in the sea, arriving at this beautifully constructed hideaway made that transition into the next season so much easier.
The hot tub was heating up as we arrived, kindly lit by the owner of the cabin. Soon, we had the wood burning stove also roaring, transforming the snug interior into a cosy reading den. And later, we’d light the firepit outdoors for extra cosy vibes. This is exactly what I want from a couple of nights in a cosy cabin, soaking in an outdoor tub and snuggling up by a fire, but Old Orchard has even more autumnal tricks up its sleeve. Rather obviously from its name, the cabin is surrounded by apple trees, which were groaning beneath the weight of their fruit when we arrived. Apples for snacks, apples for breakfast, and apples to take home with us! There were also two friendly ponies living in the neighbouring field, who we made friends with during our stay. Roaring fires, apple trees, ponies, hot tub — what else could you want for an autumn getaway?
The cabin itself is only small, but has everything you need for a short stay. Out of the deck, there is the aforementioned fire pit and hot tub, along with a table and two chairs where we dined each night. The cabin itself is constructed with a Nordic design, made by the owners (one of whom has Finnish heritage). Inside, there’s a comfortable bed, a well equipped kitchen and bathroom with shower. We spent most of our time enjoying the outdoors, retreating inside to read in bed as the woodburner crackled.
Old Orchard Cabin just so happens to be situated in one of my favourite areas of East Devon, just outside Colyton. It’s a short drive to the beaches of Beer and Branscombe — the former being a lovely village with interesting shops and plenty of pubs, and the latter being one of my favourite places to swim on that stretch of coastline. There’s a wonderful clifftop walk between the two if you have time. For those of you who don’t fancy cooking during your stay, the Pig at Coombe and Glebe House are both just a short drive away. We chose to dine at both of these for lunches and cook in the evening, to enjoy the most of our time at the cabin.
If you’re looking for a snug and restful hideaway for a slow paced getaway, Old Orchard Cabin offers idyllic views, cosy vibes and beautiful surroundings.
