Slow Stays | Scarlet Hotel & Spa (ad/pr stay)

Immediately following our two night stay at Bedruthan, we relocated just a short distance to Scarlet, it’s sister hotel which sits just a little closer to the beach and caters to adults only. I’ve had this hotel on my wish list for several years now, mainly due to photographs and reviews of their spa, which I was excited to try out. As with our time at Bedruthan, we juggled work and leisure during our stay, taking advantage of our very comfortable room and the hotel’s communal spaces to catch up with work, while making plenty of time for long walks and indulging in the spa.

Scarlet has five tiers of bedrooms — we stayed in one of their ‘just right’ rooms, the smallest they offer. The room featured a queen size bed, huge bathroom, sofa (one of my pet peeves is not having anywhere to sit in your hotel room) and a balcony with an excellent view of the beach. It felt cosy, but was also spacious enough for the two of us and Evie (who, once again, was treated to her own bed, bowls and treats). We didn’t spent too much time in our room, however, as the hotel has so much more to offer.

I love a spa, whether it’s a simple sauna or an indulgent massage, and Scarlet’s spa has to be one of the very best I’ve experienced so far. Indoors, you’ll find a relaxation room (where I wanted to try out every single seat, as they all looked so comfy), a steam room and large swimming pool with floor-to-ceiling windows offering views of the garden and sea beyond. Outside, was where I truly fell in love. The hotel’s iconic natural reed pool was a delight to swim in, rain or shine. I whiled away many hours on both days of our stay alternating between bracingly cold swims and lounging in the cedar wood sauna. There is also a scattering of wood-fired hot tubs, but sadly I had to cancel my session as the Cornish weather decided my booked time was the moment to unleash what felt like a brief hurricane.

If you’re staying at Scarlet, I highly recommend booking a holistic treatment, which are available for hotel guests only. Treatments begin with an Ayurvedic consultation, which was new to me but I found incredibly insightful. I enjoyed an incredibly relaxing back, shoulders, neck and head massage (so relaxing, I almost fell asleep) but each massage is tailored to the individual. The spa also offers rhassoul, hammam, copper tub bathing, facials and specialised ‘journeys’ (which I would love to experience on my next visit).

We also enjoyed dinner in their restaurant one night (note — their restaurant isn’t dog friendly) which was wonderful. I’m still thinking of my hispi cabbage main three weeks on, and my dessert stood out as one of the best I’ve had in a long time (which is a big accolade for someone who doesn’t have a sweet tooth). Cocktails in the bar, as well as breakfast both mornings were also delicious.

Scarlet is definitely a treat, especially if you add on spa treatments and dinner, but it’s the perfect place to stay for a special occasion. I especially loved how most of the spa (excluding treatments and the hot tubs) was unlimited access for hotel guests. If you enjoy cold water swimming and saunas, you could spend your entire stay indulging in the spa’s offerings. The location is also a huge draw — the hotel has wonderfully wild gardens to explore, which weave down past the spa to join the coastal path. There are several cosy nooks in the gardens to sit and relax while watching the surfers below. It’s also just a short walk down onto the beach to soak up the sun or for dog walks.

Both hotels were a delight to stay in, and felt like such a welcomed treat. We’ll definitely be returning to Mawgan Porth in the future!
